40th Anniversary Monterey Pop Tribute
Concert June 9 at Continental Club
Advance Tickets on Sale May 1
Long before anyone had ever heard the word
‘ Woodstock,’ The Summer of Love was a
watershed event in American political and musical history.
And during the final few days of spring in 1967, from June 16-18, some 200,000 people ushered in that landmark summer season of ‘flower power’ in California at the Monterey International Pop Festival.
While the other regional jazz and folk festivals had been part of the country’s music mosaic since the 1950s, this was the first time a major three-day concert featuring pop and rock bands was staged. And what a legacy it left us.
Many of the most influential musicians of that era appeared on stage – and it marked the first major American performance by guitar great Jimi Hendrix and The Who.
It was also one of the first times that black soul singer Otis Redding performed for a predominantly white audience, and was the coming out party for spitfire vocalist Janis Joplin of Big Brother & The Holding Company.
Forty years later, the songs from that landmark concert are still relevant today.
Relive some of those performances at a special showcase concert celebrating the music of Monterey Pop at 8 p.m. , Saturday, June 9 at Houston ’s Continental Club, 3700 Main St . The showcase features many of Houston ’s best-known musicians taking on the roles of performers who appeared during the original festival.
Confirmed so far are songs performed at Monterey by Big Brother & The Holding Company; Buffalo Springfield; The Byrds; Jimi Hendrix; The Grateful Dead; Moby Grape Jefferson Airplane; Otis Redding; Johnny Rivers; Simon & Garfunkel and The Who.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m. This show will sell out! Get there early to feel the vibe and hang with the beautiful people!
Beginning May 1, advance tickets at $10 will be on sale next door to the club at Sig’s Lagoon record store at 3710 Main St . To inquire about advance tickets, call 713-533-9525. For general information about the show, call 713-688-0104.
